About Us

Kerala Journalists Union (KJU) affiliated to Indian Journalists Union (IJU), the premier organization of media persons in the country, in 2001 (Registration No.09-06 of 2001) as a Trade Union of media persons in Kerala. The Union was registered with Mr. Roy Mathew, ZEE NETWORKS NEWS, Thiruvanathapuram as President, G. Prabhakaran, Senior Correspondent of `The Hindu' , Palakkad, as Working President and S. Jagadeesh Baby, Bureau of Chief of `Kerala Kaumudi', Palakkad, as General Secretary with 17 State Executive Committee members. KJU is publishing a monthly `KJU NEWS' regularly to publish the activities of the Union in different parts of Kerala and outside. The first book on paid news (Media & Paid News) in the country was published by Kerala Journalists Union in 2010.

Our Vision

The amended constitution of the KJU was adopted in the special conference of the Union held at Thiruvanathapuram on November 18, 2012.

Our Mission

To work for promoting and maintaining the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity. To promote a spirit of co-operation and understanding among working journalists.

The Aims and Objectives:

  • To organize the Working Journalists in the State of Kerala including in the rural areas.
  • To raise the status of the members of the profession of journalism.
  • To promote a spirit of co-operation and understanding among working journalists.
  • To strive for the betterment of working conditions of journalists, especially in terms of salary, tenure of office, security of service, conditions of service etc.,
  • To promote and maintain the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity.
  • To safeguard and promote member's interests generally and to assist them whenever necessary in securing employment.
  • To promote amenities for recreation and scope for social and cultural activities.
  • To build up and administer funds for provision of legal aid, unemployment\disablement\retirement\death benefits and benefits of an allied nature.
  • To promote wage agreements on the State-basis, the Union acting on behalf of the employees.
  • To secure redressal of grievances of members in particular and Working Journalists in general against employers and to secure, as far as possible, a settlement of dispute between them by peaceful means and specific bargaining so as to avoid needless dislocation of work.
  • To work for and promote legislation for the welfare of Working Journalists.
  • To strive for the Freedom of the Press.
  • To secure facilities or establish institutions and provide training for journalists and organize temporary or permanent training courses in areas of print and audio-visual and new media journalism both for Working Journalists and for different sections of people.
  • To publish, when conditions permit, officials journals and other publication and set up audio-visual and new media organizations and publication, production, transmission and broadcast\telecast units.
  • To secure representation for Working Journalists on delegations that are sent abroad by the Government of India or any State Government and also on Commissions and Committees appointed by these Governments and on which representation for non-official is desired and which are required to ascertain public opinion or make recommendations therefore..
  • To conduct the affairs of the Union on trade union basis.

Membership

The membership of the Union, subject to the prevision of the Constitution, shall be open to all Working Journalists as defined in the Working Journalists' Act and permanent journalist employees of TV\ Radio channels\ new agencies in the non-government sector producing\ telecasting\ broadcasting news bulletins on a daily basis.
